I don't care...

That's my new motto.

No wait.  I think it should be "Eat my shorts!"

Of course,  I don't wear shorts.

Hmmmm.  Maybe it should be,  "I'd like to help you, but not as much as I'd like not to."

No, that's really more of a mission statement than a motto, isn't it?

How about, "Won't kill you."

I don't know.... that really sounds more like a guarantee...  and there are some people who I just can't guarantee that to.  (Joking, I swear.  Mostly joking.  More or less joking)

Perhaps, "Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, SHUT UP!"

Of course, that really only pertains to people at work... and sometimes my kids.... and occasionally my husband.... and my mom.... definitely my sister.   So hey, that works!  Ok, my motto is....

"Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, SHUT UP!"

Random Ramblings....

We leave for vacation Friday, and I'm pretty excited about that.  We're going to visit my Dad, stepmom, and brother, and spend a little time on the golf course/swimming pool/beach.

While I was talking to my dad the other night, updating him on our travel plans and on Eli's baseball season (click below for actual video highlights!) he said something about my brother that has stuck in my head.  My dad was wishing that he could see Eli play, but said that he felt guilty leaving my step-mom to care for my brother all by herself.  He said "Someday, this won't be a problem.  Either he'll get better, or he won't."

Get better?  Wow, that never even occurred to me.  Do I have so little faith?  I've thought about it for the last several days, and I've come to the conclusion that I don't believe he'll get better.  Not ever.  How sad.

Baseball season is finally over.  Well, summer ball is.  Eli starts fall ball in August.  And Spencer starts football at the end of July.  I had better enjoy this brief respite while it lasts!!  Actually, I love it.  I love watching them play.  I don't know what I'd do with myself if I wasn't running one of my kids to one sport or another.  (Maybe blog more!)

I'm all healed up from my hysterectomy, and I feel pretty good.  I thought I was done with the Gyn for awhile, but I got a letter in the mail from him the other day with the results of my mammogram.  I have a lump and "changes" since the mammogram last year.  I get to visit yet another surgeon on the 30th.  I'm pretty stressed about this.  My mom had a radical mastectomy when she was 30 due to cancer.  I hate that word.  I also hate the phrases "more than likely" "probably" "most usually"  Doctors suck.

I hate my job.  I've spent the last several months trying to convince myself that I don't, but I do.  So then I spent several months telling myself that at least it was better than my last job.  But it's not.  It sucks just as bad.  Maybe worse.

Yesterday I told one of the supervisors to bite my sack.  She thought I was kidding.  I wasn't.  I figured the fact that I said it with a totally straight face would be a clue, but evidently not.  See what kind of dumbasses they are??

Oh yeah, baseball videos.   These were from our digital camera, so there's no sound.  But they're still pretty cool.

Happy 4th of July!

We went to a fireworks display in a neighboring town, and I have to say, it was a really good show.  It started raining just a little towards the end of the show, but the heavy rain held off until we were in the car on the way home.

We had a great day.  We went to a cookout at a friends house and then swam, and then went to the fireworks this evening.

While at the fireworks, we discovered we were sitting in front of a bunch of rednecks.  This, in itself, is really not surprising.  We live in a pretty rural area, so rednecks are pretty common.  This particular redneck, however, was very vocal.  This became apparent with the first volley of fireworks.  This is what we heard from behind us:

"WHOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!  YEAH!!!!  YEAH!!!   ALRIGHT!!!!   WHOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"

Ben and I kind of looked at each other and smirked, and Spencer looked at me and I said "Don't say ANYTHING"

So, as the show went on, we heard from this redneck, whom Ben started calling Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yocal, more and more frequently.  Finally, after one paricularly impressive display, Cletus, who was apparently at a loss to describe how awesome he thought the fireworks were, yelled "NASCAR!!!!!"

At this, I totally lost it, and had to slide down in my chair so the guy wouldn't see me laughing.  Spencer looks over at me and says "Did you hear that guy?  He yelled NASCAR!!"  I said "Shut up, boy, before Cletus gets out his huntin' knife and comes to kill us all."  At this point Ben had finally stopped laughing and hollered "Play some Skynyrd!!

Well, the display was working up to the finale, and we were hearing from Cletus more and more frequently.  I got to giggling and couldn't stop.  Finally, Ben and I decided to join in.  It went something like this:

"PPffffftttt......BOOM"  Cletus would yell "YEAH!!!!"  Ben would holler "WHOOOOHOOOO!!!"  then I would yell "NASCAR!"

Who has more fun then us, huh?

My one day off...

Ahhhh, Sunday.  My day off.  I beat Ben and Eli to the computer, so I thought I'd take the chance to blog!

I went back to work on June 11, only to find out we were on mandatory overtime.  I HATE mandatory overtime.  HATE it.  It's just something about the whole "mandatory" part of it.  I've worked over 100 hours in the last two weeks.  Oh well, show me the money!  (I guess, since I don't really have a choice anyway!)

We've also been keeping busy with baseball.  We're at the ballpark 4 or 5 nights a week.  Both of the boy's teams have had difficult seasons, but both are showing improvement.  We had a great time watching Eli's team (rated last place) beat the snot out of the first place team yesterday.  We won 17 - 6.  It was AWESOME!

On a side note, during the game, Eli came out of the dugout and asked for a bottle of water.  I dug out some money, and looked around for Spencer, who is always happy for a chance to spend some money.  I didn't see him, so I was getting ready to go get it myself, when a very pretty girl said, "Oh, I'll go get it for you, Mrs. Immortal."  So, she did, then brought me my change, and said, "I'll take it to him for you, if you want."  I smiled and thanked her.  A couple of innings later, Eli asked for another bottle of water.  (We think he was hoping a pretty girl would bring it to him again!) but the girl and her friends had gone to a different part of the park, so his little brother delivered it that time.  However, last night, Eli added a couple of contacts to his messenger list.  Yep - Pretty Girl AND her friend.  And, Pretty Girl called last night.  So did her friend.  So did some other girl.

I think we're in trouble!

Spencer talked me into getting out my bike yesterday and going for a ride.  This is something I hadn't done for a couple of years, and let me tell you, the muscles in my ass and the back of my thighs are letting me know about it today!  I figure I need to start riding on a regular basis, as part of my whole "getting healthy" deal (I've lost 52 pounds - and counting!).  Man, I remember when riding a bike was fun, not torture!

I'm trying to talk myself into getting motivated and working on Eli's bedroom today.  It is currently dismantled, waiting to be finished so he can move back in.  I kind of lost steam, but Spencer is getting very irritated having his brother in his room.  Spencer is a neat-nick.  Eli is a slob.  I know things are getting serious, because Spencer marched out of his room yesterday, grabbed my arm, led me to his room, and said "Look at this mess!!  He's leaving stuff all over the place.  He loses my remote!  It's driving me CRAZY!  I'm going to hurt him if you don't get him out of my room!!"  Now, Eli is much bigger and stronger than Spencer, but I think Spencer could take him if Eli makes him mad enough.  So, I guess I'd better work on getting things finished up.

We're closing on our refinace tomorrow.  I'm pretty excited about that.  We're getting some bills paid off and doing a couple of projects around the house that I've been wanting done.  Ben and I had been looking to buy another house, but after looking for almost a year, we've decided that with some modifications, we're in the house we're looking for.  I bought this house 10 years ago because I thought it had great potential.  I guess it's just time to do something with it.

Well, I guess I better go get to work!  So much for my day off!

An Immortal Update

Hey everyone!

Ben reminded me the other day that it's been a long time since I updated my blog.  (I reminded him that he could type too!)  So, I posted some new pictures , and here's an update for each of us...

Ben has been working his tail off, working loads of overtime and them coming home and working on the house.  We've decided in the past few months that we're selling, then refinancing, then selling again, and now we're on the fence...  Anyway, he's been getting some long overdue projects done, so it's all good whatever we decide to do.

Eli is currently on a class trip in Washington DC.  He won't get home until Friday.  He's playing summer ball, and shortly after it's over, fall ball will begin.  School let out a couple of weeks ago, and he received awards for baseball, basketball, and track.  He also managed to make "honorable mention" for his grades, after seriously slacking off in the second quarter of the year.  (He was seriously grounded until the grades came out mid-way through the third quarter!)

Spencer is also playing summer ball.  He's catcher this year, and is doing pretty well!  He's very excited because he's finally old enough to play football this year.  (Ack!)  He will go to Cub Scout Daycamp in a couple of weeks, and football camp at the end of July.

I had a hysterectomy on May 10th.  I'm feeling great - I actually have felt guilty for the past couple of weeks for not being at work.  I have to go back to work next Monday, the 11th.  I've also lost 50 pounds, which I'm pretty excited about.  We visited Ben's family in Ohio over Memorial Day weekend.  His entire family was very surprised to see me, and commented how great I looked so soon after having surgery.  Ben's sister and I were talking about my surgery, and I mentioned that it had been done vaginally, so I was recovering much more quickly than if I had had an abdominal surgery.  She got this very confused look on her face - and started laughing.  Evidently, Ben's mother had told everyone that I had bariatric surgery.  <snort>  I've also been doing some projects around the house, painting mostly, but we ripped up the carpet in Eli's room tonight so I can refinish the hardwood underneath.  That's the last room in the house with carpet.

We're planning a vaction to NC in July to visit family and spend some time at the beach.  We are all pretty excited about that.  We went last year, too, but did not get to spend nearly enough time on the beach.  The boys have made us promise that this year we will spend at least one full day there, and they're pushing for two.

Hope everyone is doing well!  Sorry it's been so long since we checked in.  I promise to try to do better!

Carbon Monoxide

I know we've all heard the warnings about carbon monoxide, but I wanted to share the experience I had this week.  I nearly lost my mother and my grandmother Tuesday evening after their house filled up with carbon monoxide.

My mother went to bed about 4 o'clock because she had a headache.  About 6 o'clock, my grandmother started having chest pains, and realized she was too weak to get up and wake up my mother, and could not wake her up by hollering for her.  Luckily, she called my sister, who lives a couple of blocks away.  My sister got there and was able to wake up my mother, with great difficulty, and then called 911.  The fire department got there first, and thought they detected a gas odor.  After bringing in their monitoring equipment, they realized that the problem was carbon monoxide.  Normal, safe levels are 0-2.  The reading in my grandmother's house was over 700, and climbing.  They did not have carbon monoxide detectors.

The good news is, they got help in time.  My grandmother was very ill, and had to spend a couple of days in intensive care.  My mother was able to be released after a few hours on oxygen.  The firemen we talked to told us that if they had stayed in the house even another hour, they would have died.

Ben and I bought carbon monoxide detectors a couple of weeks ago, because it's a law in Illinois now to have them.  We made sure that CO2 detectors were installed in my grandmother's house the next day.  (They live across the river, in Indiana)

So, here's your public service message for the day!  If you don't have CO2 detectors, get one!  Have your furnace checked yearly, and make sure it's venting properly!  That was the problem at my grandmother's house – the furnace vents through the chimney, and the chimney became blocked.

Thirteen...

Eli turned 13 on November 23rd.  We had his party last night.  We rented out the teen center, hired a DJ, bought gallons of punch and a huge sheet cake.  I have to say, it was a roaring success.  At one point we had about 60 kids there.

I thoroughly embarrassed Eli by dancing to "You Can't Touch This."  Of course his girlfriend (GIRLFRIEND!!) requested the song so I would dance.  She wanted to se what Eli would do.  (Flying tackle through the crowd to knock me back into the kitchen before too many of his friends saw me).  I have to say, I kind of like her!

I've been tagged by Fauve, so here goes...

THE RULES

Each player of this game starts with the 6 weird things about you. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 6 weird things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says "you are tagged" in their comments and tell them to read your blog.

1.  I eat M&M's by color, and always in even numbers.  I don't know why.

2.  I can't stand crunching - potato chips, carrots, whatever.  The sound makes me want to grab the offending person and shake them until the crunchy stuff falls out of their mouth.

3.  I can't sleep with my ears out.  I have to have the covers over my ears, or I can't fall asleep.

4.  I once spent Christmas in Guantanomo Bay, Cuba.  We tried to have a picnic on the beach, but got chased back to the car by overly aggressive iguanas.

5.  I hate cheese.  I don't think this is particularly weird, but most people I know think it is.  I do, however, like pizza.

6.  I used to be a nanny.  I lived in the servant's quarters of the house with the maid.

A moral dilemma

As I've said before, we're involved in Cub Scouting.  Eli was a Scout, Spencer is a Scout, and Ben and I have been involved as leaders or committee members for years.  I've been a den leader for the past two years, and I've been asked to take over as Cub Master next year.

I was at a leader meeting the other night, and the district exec was talking about how sometimes we can't approve some people who apply to be leaders or volunteers.  For instance, we can't approve felons, child molesters, or people with known substance abuse problems.  I'm totally on board with that - I don't want my kids around those kinds of people.  However, he also talked about how Boy Scouts won't approve known homosexuals, and related a story of how he had to turn down a man in another district who volunteered to help re-organize a pack, even though he was more than qualified.  And it wasn't because he was a predator, or a druggie, but simply because he was gay.

I was taken aback.  This is definitely not the values we try to teach our children - in fact it's the exact opposite.

So when I started thinking about it, I remembered a news story about a man that was not allowed to be a leader because he was gay.  I started doing a little research, and discovered the have been lots of instances where this has happened.  And the Scouting organization is very firm in their stance - based on the religious values of the organization, they will not allow homosexuals.

Now, there are a lot of churches who still believe that being gay dooms you to hell.  However, there are a lot of churches that don't believe that anymore.  My personal opinion (and that of my husband as well) is that God does not make mistakes.  If someone is gay, that's the way God made them.  Who am I to say that God is going to make someone a certain way, and them doom them to hell for acting on it?

We have always tried to teach our kids to be fair-minded.  We've tried to teach them that nobody deserves to be discriminated against because of their religion, or the color of their skin, or thier sex, or their sexual orientation.  And now, I find myself deeply involved with an organization that expounds values that are the exact opposite of what we believe and try to teach our kids.

Scouting does a lot of good things.  They teach patriotism, reverence, community service, health and life skills.  And, the boys have fun while their learning these values.

Can I justify the fact this organization discriminates against one group of people by pointing to all the good things it does?  I honestly don't know if I can remain involved, knowing that their core values conflict so drastically with our core values in this area.  If I do remain involved, can I say to my kids, "We don't agree with this one thing, but all of the rest of the stuff is ok."

I'm on the fence with this.  I actually enjoy being a leader, and my kids have always enjoyed being involved.  I just don't know if I can reconcile the good with the bad.  And if I do, does it make me a hypocrite?

35

That's how old I was on Friday.  I was having kind of a hard time getting my head around that number - 35.  However, I think my biggest problem is not that I just turned 35 - but that Eli is turning 13 in a few more days.  Yikes!

I can't believe I'm going to be the mother of a teenager in a few more days.  I only feel like I should only be about 16 on most days.  Yeah, I'm 16 with two kids and a mortgage..... but 16.  Definitely not this woman I see in my mirror everyday who's getting gray hair and the beginnings of crow's feet.  Crow's feet which will, according to the faces of my mother and grandmother, lengthen into pterodactyl tracks within a few more years.  And jowls.  I need to start saving for a face-lift now!

What was I saying?.....

Oh yeah.

Mother of a teenager.  Birthday.  Got it.

Anyway, I had a great birthday.  I went to work, of course, but I got gifts there, plus snacks.  Plus I got to wear the super-cool birthday crown.  I came home and got ready and went to Eli's first basketball game of the season.  It was so cool!  We lost, and that was kind of a bummer, but Eli played great!  He was on the team last year, and did ok, but this year he had improved so much!  He's gotten very aggressive.  In fact, he's turned into the kind of kid that made we scream "Get that maniac off the floor before he hurts someone!!" last year.  He got four fouls called on him - he's turned into quite a thug!  I'm so proud.

After the game, we decided to go out for pizza, but when we got there I realized that we had chosen a restaurant that still allowed smoking.  So, we left and went to McDonalds instead.  Then we came home, and I got to open more presents and have cake.  Spencer made me a styrofoam spider with googly eyes and pipe-cleaner legs, and wrapped it himself.  It's so cute!  I got a MP3 player from Ben, and the pans to make a checkerboard cake - and he had already used the pans to make my cake that evening.  What a good husband.  I can't wait to start transferring some of my cd's onto the MP3 player.  I'm finally high-tech!  Or at least higher-tech than I was.

Happy Halloween!

Tomorrow is Halloween - it is officially my favorite time of year.  I love the weeks after Halloween that lead up to Christmas!  I admit it - I've already got a bunch of Christmas shopping done!

We spent Saturday afternoon at the pumpkin patch.  We went through the corn maze, flung small gourds and pumpkins with a giant slingshot, rode on a hayride, played in the corn room (which is exactly what it sounds like - a room filled with corn!), dug for gold, and found the perfect pumpkin for jack-o-lantern carving.

Spencer had his last soccer game yesterday.  He didn't enjoy soccer as much this year, mostly because he was irritated that he was not old enough to play football.  He'll be old enough next year, and has already announced that he'll be playing football instead of soccer.  Jeez!

Eli went to a Bar-Mitzvah on Saturday night.  The family went all-out.  It was a "Pirates of the Carribean" theme, so he came home loaded down with plent of pirate-related booty.  He said there was great food, movies, and lots of dancing.  I'm jealous!

Below is a picture of a local jack-o-lantern display.  Isn't it cool?
